TIL that old boilermaker named Joe at the Local 33 hall taught me more in 10 minutes than my whole first year

I was struggling with a lap seam on a 3/8 plate and Joe walked over, took my stinger, and showed me a wider weave that laid it flat. He just said "you're fighting the puddle, let it breathe." Anyone else have an old timer drop wisdom on you like that?

Heard that same line from an old welder who could barely see through his mask, still laid a bead straighter than my tape measure.

Old timers just KNOW things, @simonp47, took me ages to stop fighting the puddle too.
