That time a $30 stud finder saved me from a $900 mistake

Was marking out a support bracket in a warehouse last Tuesday and my dumb magnetic one kept telling me a pipe was a stud. Bought a cheap deep-scan unit with a metal sensing mode on sale for $30, and it caught a fire suppression line buried in insulation that would've wrecked the whole row of racking. Anyone else run into false positives with their basic finders, or is it just me?

And it makes you wonder how many other shortcuts we take without realizing it. I had a basic voltage tester that kept beeping on a dead wire for months, turns out the insulation was breaking down and it was picking up bleed from the next circuit. Same idea with my tire gauge, it read fine but was off by 4 PSI, which is enough to wear out a set of tires early. The cheap tools get you 90 percent there, but that last 10 percent is where the real money hides. I think people assume the simple version is good enough until one day it isn't, and then they pay for it ten times over.
