Talking to a 20-year apprentice changed how I think about my grinder
He said I was wasting money replacing burnt out grinders every 6 months because I never cleaned the vents. Showed me how he blows his out with air every Friday, and his same Dewalt has lasted 4 years. Anyone else been doing this wrong the whole time?

Cleaning vents is just basic maintenance...

Ryanh56 calls it basic maintenance but I would argue most of these grinders are built to be disposable now. If you have to baby a tool with weekly air blasts just to get four years out of it, that isn't great engineering, that is you doing the manufacturer's job for them. Maybe we should be buying better quality tools instead of letting companies off the hook for poor design.
