Shoutout to the old-timer who told me to try a different bevel on that 2-inch thick plate
I was welding a pressure vessel skirt in Houston and kept getting porosity, even after grinding it clean. He had me switch from a 37.5 to a 30 degree bevel and the next pass was perfect, no inclusions. Anyone have a go-to bevel angle for heavy carbon steel?

Honestly, that sounds like overkill for a skirt. A good root pass should handle it, bevel or not. Maybe your machine settings were just off.

Nah, a root pass alone can leave a weak spot on thick material. I've seen skirts crack right at the seam from that stress. A quick bevel gives the weld metal a place to go, making a way stronger joint. It's cheap insurance against a failure down the line.

Yeah, and that stress riser from a cold root is no joke.
