Saw a 30-year fitter use soap for alignment, my level was in the truck
I mean, watched this old timer from Gary, Indiana line up a 6-foot flange with nothing but dish soap and a hammer. No laser, no dial indicator, he had it dead nuts in maybe 20 minutes. My process with the level and shims took me twice as long last week, so is the old school way just better for field work, or am I missing something about precision in tight spaces? Has anyone else given up on digital tools for certain jobs, or is that just me being lazy?

Man, that old timer probably keeps a spare torpedo level in his truck just to confuse young guys like us! Sounds like you got outperformed by a bottle of Dawn and some elbow grease, which is honestly the most humbling thing I've read all week.
