My old foreman in Detroit always said to double-check the flange alignment before final weld, and I finally learned why after a 12-hour rework on a boiler feed pump.

I mean, I rushed it once on a Friday, the whole assembly was off by like an eighth of an inch, and we had to cut everything apart on Monday, so has anyone got a better trick for a quick visual check besides just a straight edge?

Nah, lasers seem like overkill for a simple flange check.

Had a job last year where I was trying to square up a pipe flange by myself and straight edge just wasnt cutting it. Clamped a little laser level to a piece of angle iron and it made lining up the bolts way easier than trying to eyeball it with a ruler. Still use that trick when Im working solo and need to be sure the flange is flat.

Oh man, that's a brutal lesson to learn the hard way. I saw a tip online where a guy uses a cheap laser pointer clamped to a mag base, shoots it down the flange face to a target a few feet away, and marks the spot. Any movement when you tack shows up instantly. Seems faster than a straight edge for a solo check.

A laser just adds more crap to set up when a straight edge takes ten seconds.
