Found out a rivet forge from 1890 could hit 2,400 degrees and I've been babying my torch ever since
I was killing time at the Ohio Valley tool swap in Wheeling last Saturday and an old timer had a hand crank rivet forge set up on a trailer. He had a little infrared thermometer and showed me it was reading 2,400 degrees at the heart of the coals, which floored me because I always figured those old setups barely got hot enough for small stuff. He was heating 3/4 inch round bar and it was orange in about 90 seconds while two of us stood there with our jaws on the ground. Made me wonder how much of what we call progress is just us getting comfy with fancy gear. Any of you ever run an old coal or coke forge on a job, and did it actually keep up?
