We were patching a 6 foot section of boiler shell and I kept fighting these stubborn waves along the seam. He said stop rushing the fit up and run a rosebud over the plate first, warm it up before you even strike an arc. I figured he was just old school stalling, but I tried it on the next pass with my torch and a temp stick. The plate pulled way less and the seam came out flat enough that QC barely looked at it twice. Now I keep a temp stick in my bag, but I still wonder if it works the same on thicker plate.
