Can we talk about grinding wheels - what grit do you actually use for prep?

I used to always grab a 36 grit for removing old welds but after a bad gouge on a repair job last month I switched to 60 grit and it took longer but the finish was way smoother. Anyone else switched grits recently and found a big difference in your work?

That 36 grit is brutal, I had the same issue with a gouge on a repair job. Swapping to a 60 grit was a game changer for me too, took a bit longer but the control was way better and I didn't mess up the piece again.

Used to be a 36 grit lifer myself. Thought slower grits were for rookies who didn't know how to handle a real disc. But after wrecking a pricey piece of stainless last spring I finally tried a 60 and yeah, you're right. Way more control and way fewer cuss words.
