Used to roll my eyes at solo variants, then my copy of Spirit Island sat unplayed for 5 months
I always felt solo board gaming was kind of sad, like playing catch by yourself. Then my group fell apart after two of us had a baby in the same month, and I had Spirit Island sitting on the shelf collecting dust because it needs 2 players minimum. One night I tried the solo rules just to learn the game better, and honestly it plays tighter than most games do with a full table. The whole thing made me admit that waiting around for other people is the real reason half my shelf never hits the table. How do you all decide when a game is worth playing solo versus just waiting for the group to come back?
Man, your line about playing catch by yourself hit me. I bought Arkham Horror LCG during the lockdown and told myself I was just building decks, then three weeks later I'm two handing it at my kitchen table with a podcast on and having a great time. Weird part is I still cant bring myself to solo a party game, something about it feels wrong. For heavy stuff though, if the setup is under ten minutes and the game has a real solo mode built in, I just play it instead of letting it rot.
