The guy at my Tuesday board game meetup in San Antonio said all co-op games are solitaire with extra steps
I was packing up my copy of Pandemic at a cafe on Blanco last Tuesday and this guy next to me just drops that line. At first I laughed it off, but then I thought about all the times one person at the table basically runs the whole game while everyone else just flips cards. We had a 4 player game where one guy told the other three of us exactly what to do on every single turn, and honestly it felt like we were just his hands. Since then I've been picking games where everyone has hidden info, like The Crew or Mysterium, and the table talk gets way better. Has anyone else run into the one player who takes over every co-op game, and how do you deal with them without being rude?
The "solitaire with extra steps" line is funny but honestly kinda true sometimes, your mileage may vary depending on the group. In my experience the problem is never the game, it is the one person who cannot stop themselves from playing everyone else's turns too. I have been that guy before and I did not even notice until someone called me out, so sometimes just saying "hey let me mess this turn up on my own" works better than you would think. The Crew was a smart move on your part because you literally cannot quarterback a hand you cannot see. Mysterium is hit or miss for me since the ghost can still try to steer everything, but at least it keeps people talking. If the guy keeps doing it after a gentle nudge, I just stop inviting him to co-ops and save him for competitive games where he can only ruin his own night.
