That one comment about my dice tower made me rethink how I teach games
A guy at our local meetup in Austin said my 10 minute rule explanations were killing the fun for new players, so I cut them down to 3 minutes and let people learn by playing. Has anyone else tried the "just start and explain as you go" approach with heavier games?

David from our group tried that with Spirit Island last month and it went sideways fast. He walked two rookies through the first 6 turns and they were still flipping cards around like they'd never seen a board game. The real question is, where's the line? I've seen the 3 minute version work great for lighter stuff like Catan or Ticket to Ride, but heavy games have so many interlocking systems that you can't just drip feed them. Did you actually finish a whole heavy game this way, or did you end up stopping halfway to do a proper teach anyway?
