PSA: My gateway game obsession almost ruined game night

I was dead set on only playing heavy euros like Terraforming Mars for months, thought lighter stuff was a waste of time. Then I heard a guy at my local shop, Dice House in Portland, say ‘you’re not here to win a prize, you’re here to hang out.’ Made me realize I was being that person who sucks the fun out of the room. Has anyone else had their game group push back on complex rules too?

Man, that guy at Dice House nailed it. I had a buddy bring out Food Chain Magnate at a party once and we spent forty minutes just setting it up while everyone else was eating chips and slowly dying inside. I was like "guys, the strategy is really deep" and my friend just stared at me and said "dude, we're three beers in, I just want to play something where I don't need a flowchart." That's when I realized you can't force a game that requires a spreadsheet on people who just want to throw dice and laugh.

Ask @paigem45 - did that Food Chain Magnate friend ever get to actually play it with a group that was ready for it, or is it still sitting in their closet gathering dust? Seems like a game that needs the right crowd or it just kills the whole night.
