Overheard someone at my local game store say 'Catan is just a trading game with extra steps'

I was picking up sleeves for my Arkham Horror LCG deck when this guy next to me said Catan is just a trading game with extra steps. He compared it to a simplified version of Chinatown but with dice deciding everything. Made me think about how much randomness I actually tolerate in games before I get frustrated. Has anyone else had a random comment at a store change how you look at a game you used to love?

Wait, has anyone actually ever had random dice work out in their favor without it totally wrecking their strategy? The way some people hype it up you'd think it's a guaranteed win, but in my experience it just makes everything a chaotic mess. I've seen trades go from fair to laughably bad real quick just because someone rolled a 1 on a 6-sided die. Honestly it feels like the internet equivalent of flipping a coin to decide who pays for lunch, except the stakes are higher and the salt is real.
