Our local game cafe's strict no-phones rule is killing the vibe for me
I see all the posts praising the new no-phones policy at our neighborhood game cafe, but I think it's a mistake. Last weekend, my friend had to step out for a family call and got scolded by staff, which ruined our game night. The rule is meant to keep people focused, but it just makes everyone anxious about missing important messages. I get that phones can be distracting, but sometimes you need to check in with family or look up a quick rule clarification. The cafe used to be a chill place where folks could relax and play, but now it feels like a library with board games. I've started going to a different spot that lets you use phones quietly, and it's much more welcoming. It's sad because I used to love that cafe, but the strict rule is pushing people like me away.

You know, I haven't seen anyone mention how phones can be vital for players with health needs. Things like medical alerts or apps that help with seeing the board. A no-phone policy might not think about that. It could push away people who already find it hard to join in. Game spots should be about including everyone, not making rules that leave some out.

@joseph104 makes a really good point here. Tbh, I'm so bad at remembering moves I need my phone just to check the rules, let alone for health stuff. It's funny how my laziness shows me why some people truly need their devices. Blanket phone bans just don't work for everyone. Game spaces should find ways to include people, not make things harder. We have to think about all players, not just the ones without extra needs.

Honestly, that rule is why I go there, it's nice to have real chats without everyone staring at screens.
