Bought Scythe thinking my group would love it, got 4 no's in a row at game night in Amarillo
I finally dropped $70 on Scythe after months of hype, sure my Friday crew would eat it up. Brought it to the shop on Georgia Street, set it all up, and watched everyone's eyes glaze over during the rules explanation. We played two rounds, someone said 'this feels like homework,' and we packed it up for Codenames by 9pm. Did I just pick the wrong group, or is this one of those games that only clicks after 3 or 4 plays?
Takes a certain type of group to sit through a heavy euro at the end of a long week. Here is the thing nobody talks about with Scythe, its not really the rules that lose people, its the cold open. You spend 30 minutes learning symbols and moving cubes before anything fun happens, and by then half the table already checked out. Most games hook you with a big moment early so you care about the rules. Scythe makes you do chores first and hopes you stick around for the payoff. That works for a group that meets every week and likes slow burns, but a Friday night crew that just wants to hang out and laugh is gonna bounce every time. Your group isnt wrong and the game isnt wrong, they just want different things from game night.
