At a game night in Cincinnati, a guy refused to play unless we used his custom rules.

It was a simple game of Catan. He pulled out a printed sheet with his own scoring system. Said the base game was 'broken' and his way was better. We spent 45 minutes just listening to him explain it. Has anyone else had a friend who just can't play a game straight?

Feel for you so much on this one. Had a friend who would rewrite the rules to every co-op game we tried, saying they were too easy. It got to the point where learning his changes took longer than the actual game. That printed sheet vibe is so familiar... it just kills the fun before you even start. There's a special kind of tired you feel after those nights.

My old board game group had a guy who did this with every new game. We spent half of our first Scythe night listening to his "balanced" economy mod. Sometimes the house rule is fun, but showing up with a printed manifesto is a different vibe.

My old group had a rule after a night like that, we called it the ten minute veto. If someone's new rule took more than ten minutes to explain, we just voted to play the normal way. It saved so many friendships. I totally get what willow_morgan means about that special tired feeling. Honestly, the best fix is just being blunt and saying you showed up to play the game on the box, not a thesis project.
