Appreciation post for the guy who taught me about game weight at a con

I met this older guy at Gen Con last year while we were both waiting to demo a new eurogame. He asked me what I thought of the game's weight and I gave some vague answer about complexity. He just smiled and said 'weight is about rules overhead, not strategy depth' and that really clicked for me. Now I think about that every time I'm deciding whether to bring a game to game night. Has anyone else had a random comment like that reframe how you look at games?

Weight is about rules overhead, not strategy depth" yeah okay that guy basically saved you from bringing a game that takes an hour just to explain. Ngl my friend once described a game as "medium weight" and it took us 45 minutes to set up the damn thing.

45 minutes to set up" sounds like a nightmare. I'm not against heavy games but if I need a tutorial video just to figure out how to start playing, I'm out. Maybe some people like that kind of thing but I'd rather just play something where we're actually moving pieces within 5 minutes.
