Am I the only one who thinks Catan is way better with expansions than without?

I finally got my group to play Cities and Knights last weekend after a year of nagging them. The base game feels so bare once you add in barbarians and knights. We had 5 players and the game went from 90 minutes to almost 3 hours but every turn had real decisions. Playing just the base version now is like eating plain toast when you know jam is in the fridge. Does anyone else find the base game unbearable once you've tried the expansion packs?

Tell your group they can play with just the basic knights from the expansion to keep the game moving. We do that sometimes when we want a shorter game but still want SOMETHING extra beyond the base version. The barbarian attacks alone add way more tension without dragging out EVERYTHING.

Respectfully push back on this. I actually prefer the base game over Cities and Knights most of the time. The expansion adds a lot of extra rules and pieces that can make it feel like a whole different game, which is fine, but sometimes I just want that quick, clean Catan experience. For my group, the base game is like a reliable old friend we can jump into without a 30 minute rules refresher every time. The tension in the base game comes from the dice and the trading, not from barbarians, and that's enough for us. Your point about plain toast is fair but I like plain toast sometimes, especially when I don't have 3 hours to spend on a single game.

Notice how @gavina73 found a smart middle ground, just like choosing the right tool for the job makes everything better in real life.
