Why does no one talk about being forced to finish every bite at dinner

My parents made me sit at the table for 2 hours until I cleaned my plate at my aunt's house in Phoenix one summer. Now at 30 I still can't leave food behind even when I'm full. How many of you are still fighting that clean plate voice in your head?

Stare at my plate like it personally insulted my whole family tree. My mom used to say "children in Africa would love that" so I started wrapping leftovers in napkins and hiding them in my sock drawer. Now I'm 35 and still eat like I'm getting graded on it - pretty sure my brain thinks there's a pop quiz at the end of every meal.

Okay, but did that "graded on it" feeling ever turn into a weird competitive thing where you eat faster than everyone else? I bet your brain's been running a silent race against your plate for years, clocking in like it's getting a prize for finishing first. Mine does the same, and I'm pretty sure the only reward is a clean dish and a vague sense of anxiety.
