Warning: my dad said a firm handshake would get me any job, 43 applications later I call BS
When I got laid off from my warehouse gig in Toledo back in March, my dad sat me down and gave me the classic speech about eye contact, a firm handshake, and walking in to ask for the manager. So I did exactly that at 43 different places, showed up in person with a printed resume, and got told 41 times to just apply online. Only two people even looked at my resume, and one of them was the guy at a sandwich shop who said they were not hiring. Anyone else have a parent whose job advice was built for a world that closed like 15 years ago?
Your dad wasn't totally wrong, he just left out the part where you need to actually know someone first. The handshake thing still works, but only after a person already wants to hire you. Showing up cold at 43 places is rough though, sorry that happened.
