Warning: I mocked my mom's "no sleepovers past 10th grade" rule until my own daughter hit that age
When I was 15 in Tacoma my mom cut off sleepovers cold, and I swore it was just her being controlling for no reason. I brought it up at her 70th birthday in March and she finally explained that my older cousin got pregnant at 15 after a sleepover, and my mom spent 2 years scared it would happen to me. I still thought that was overkill until my daughter turned 15 last fall and started asking to stay at her boyfriend's friend's house. I said no and my daughter slammed her door and called me unfair, and I stood in the hallway feeling like my mom probably did in 1998. I am not saying my mom handled it well, she never explained anything back then. But I do wonder how many "dumb parent rules" were actually just fear nobody talked about. Did your parents ever finally explain a rule that made you see it differently?
