Told my mom at 29 that I still flinch when someone yells my name, and she just stared at me
Growing up in Bakersfield, my mother used to scream my full name from the bottom of the stairs whenever she needed something, even if it was just to find her keys. Last month at a family dinner I brought up how that yell still makes my chest tighten, and she stared at me for a second and said she only did it because the TV was too loud. Has anyone else told a parent how a small thing messed with them and gotten a totally flat answer like that?
My dad did the same thing with whistling. He'd whistle from the garage when he wanted me, two short ones, and I'd come running. Told him at 34 that sound still makes my stomach drop and he said he did it because yelling hurt his throat. Parents don't connect the dots on this stuff, they just remember their own reasons. What helped me was stopping waiting for them to get it and just naming it for myself. The flinch isn't about her anymore, it's just your body remembering, and that fades once you stop needing her to say sorry.
