My mom's 'salt is bad' rule made me ruin a brisket at a family cookout
I was at my aunt's 4th of July BBQ last summer and volunteered to smoke a brisket. Dad put me in charge of the rub, but I kept it salt-free because my mom always said too much salt is unhealthy. The whole thing came out bland as cardboard and everyone just stared at me. Has anyone else had to unlearn a parent's weird food rule the hard way?

My buddy used to make the same salt-free rubs and I thought he was being fussy until I tried one of his briskets. Now I always go heavy on kosher salt before anything else hits the meat.
