My mom's rule about never saying 'I don't know' backfired hard at work

I was talking to my coworker Dave yesterday about how my mom drilled into me that saying 'I don't know' was a sign of weakness. So for years I'd bluff my way through questions instead of admitting I was clueless. Well last month a customer asked me if a certain bait would kill wasps in their attic, and I gave a confident yes without checking first. Turns out it was the wrong stuff and I had to go back and redo the whole job for free. Has anyone else had a parent's weird rule mess them up in a real life situation like that?

“Never say I don't know” sounds like a great way to become the office scapegoat real fast.

That rule basically guarantees you'll end up digging yourself into a deeper hole every time.
