My mom's rule about always keeping a backup jar of pasta sauce in the pantry actually saved dinner last night after I dropped the first one on the tile floor.
I couldn't believe I was digging through the cabinet muttering 'thank you, Mom' under my breath, but has anyone else found that one annoying habit your parents drilled into you turned out to be kind of genius?

Yeah @nora_dixon but my dad's insistence on writing dates on everything saved me from week-old mystery leftovers.

Heard @nora_dixon's point in a podcast yesterday about how most food safety rules are just common sense dressed up as genius.

Is anyone else thinking this is just basic organization we're overcomplicating? Nobody's mom was a genius for saying keep extra pasta sauce around, that's like saying keep an extra can of beans in case dinner goes wrong. My mom's rule about labeling literally everything in the fridge with expo marker drove me crazy and honestly it was pointless because I'd just wipe it off and put leftovers back anyway. It's not habits that save us, it's just having common sense about stocking stuff you use regularly.
