My mom told me to never trust a gas station mechanic, and I learned why last Friday

My car started making a weird noise on the highway near Omaha so I pulled into a station. The guy said I needed a new alternator for $500. I called my dad who told me to check the belt first. A $15 belt later and the noise was gone. Anyone else have a parent save them from a rip off?

Yeah, my old man saved me from a $400 "fix" by tightening a loose battery cable.

Did your dad walk you through the belt check over the phone or did you already know what to look for? Always curious how people learn that stuff in a pinch.
