That old trick with a hot punch actually solved my drift pin problem last week
I've been fighting with a stuck drift pin for months on a set of tongs I'm rebuilding. Last Tuesday I was about to grab my angle grinder when a guy at the local blacksmith meetup in Springfield told me to try heating the pin with a hot punch instead of the whole piece. He showed me how to drive a dull hot punch into the pin's center, let it cool for a minute, then tap it out. Came out clean on the first try. Has anyone else had luck with this method or am I late to the party?

Oh man, I feel your pain on stuck drift pins. I've been there, staring at the grinder thinking it's the only way. That hot punch trick sounds like a lifesaver, glad it worked out for you.
