That day the anvil shifted mid-strike and I lost a blade

I was out in my shop in rural Ohio last fall working on a kitchen knife for a buddy. I had the anvil sitting on a wooden stump I'd used for years without checking it was solid. On the third heavy strike the whole thing tipped forward and I smashed my knuckles on the edge of the hardy hole. Blood everywhere and the blade had a deep gouge from hitting the floor. I spent the next hour fixing the stump with metal brackets and leveling it with shims. Has anyone else had a close call like that from something simple you overlooked?

Wait you just kept working with your mangled hand to fix the stump instead of grabbing a bandaid first? That's brutal man.

Bandaged my hand with duct tape and kept hammering until the blood soaked through everything.

Bet that duct tape saved more time than any first aid kit ever could.
