Switched my forge from coal to propane last March and my whole shop changed
I ran a coal forge for 11 years out of my garage in Akron and always figured propane was for hobby guys who did not want to learn fire management. Last March I finally bought a two burner Champion and the difference in my workflow is real. I get to heat in ten minutes instead of tending a fire for half an hour, and I can actually see the steel color without squinting through smoke. My neighbors stopped complaining too, which matters more than I want to admit. Anyone here made the switch back to coal after going gas, and if so what pulled you?
Did you notice any drop in your gas bill once you figured out your burner settings? I made the same switch about two years ago and my only complaint at first was going through tanks faster than I thought. Once I learned to dial the burners back and stop running them wide open for every heat it got way better. The thing nobody warns you about is how clean the steel stays. Less scale, less grinding, less time wasted. I still keep my old coal forge around for the odd job where I want that slow soak, but it sits cold most weeks now.
