Snapped my third cross peen hammer in two years
Last Tuesday I was forging a leaf hook and the handle just gave out. Clean break right at the eye. Third hammer I've killed since 2022. Had to finish the piece using my ball peen which worked but felt wrong. Anyone else go through tool handles faster than they should?

Wrap the handle with electrical tape where it meets the head.

Ruby's got a point about the wood quality. That splitting issue just gets worse no matter what you wrap around it. Tried electrical tape myself once and it just peeled off after a week of swinging. Had to scrap the whole handle in the end anyway.
Sometimes you just gotta accept when a tool is on its way out. Save yourself the frustration later.

Yall are talking about tape but the real issue is that cheap wood they use nowadays. If the handle is splitting at the head no amount of tape is gonna save it for long, you're just hiding the problem. I've had better luck drilling a small hole through both and putting a tight screw in there before it gets worse.
