Overheard a guy at the hardware store say 'you can't forge a conscience, but you can sure temper one' and I've been puzzling over that all week.
It made me wonder if we put too much stock in the 'character building' part of the craft versus just making good, solid things that last.

That's a good line. I've always felt the best character comes from just doing the work right, not from trying to build it like a separate project.
