My old cross peen hammer finally gave out on me yesterday

I was working on a leaf for a gate hinge and the head just flew off on the third strike. It was a hammer my granddad gave me, so the handle was pretty old. I had to stop the whole project and spend the evening fitting a new hickory handle. Has anyone had good luck with a specific brand for replacement hammer handles that hold up?

My grandad's hammer broke too, and a Vaughan hickory handle has lasted me ten years now.

Sorry to hear about your granddad's hammer, that's a real bummer. Did the old handle break or did it just come loose from the head? I've had both happen and fixing a loose head is a totally different process than fitting a whole new handle.

Wow, my buddy had that happen with an Estwing.
