Last Tuesday in the forge was a disaster from start to finish
Had a batch of tool steel I was trying to harden for a chisel and it cracked right down the middle because I forgot to normalize it before quenching. Anyone else have a day where every piece you touch ends up in the scrap bucket?

That's the worst feeling, watching good steel just give up like that. The normalizing step always feels like a waste of time until you skip it once and regret it. Nothing teaches a lesson like a five-dollar chunk of metal turning into a two-cent paperweight.

It's funny how that applies to everything, not just steel. I see people skip steps all the time in other stuff. Like cooking, skipping the rest time on a steak makes it tough every time. People act like the little details don't matter until they screw up the whole thing.

Actually my $35 chunk of 1095 taught me that lesson last month @margaret304... skipped the normalizing step on a big bowie and it cracked right down the middle on the quench. The metal didn't even give up, it was my own dumb shortcut that killed it.
