I finally got my forge welding to stick on the first try

Been fighting with a billet of 1080 and 15n20 for about 4 months now, and last Tuesday it just clicked. I was running my forge at 2350 and used a little less borax than usual, and the weld held solid through the first draw out. Anybody else have a specific temp or flux amount that changed their welding game?

Oh man, that feeling when it finally clicks is the best, right? I had a similar breakthrough with a canister weld a while back. What got me curious is you mentioning the borax amount. Did you find that using less made the flux less runny and more tacky on the surface, or was it more about the time it took for the weld to set? Because I've always been told to go heavy on it, but now I'm wondering if I'm just making a mess with too much.

Yeah I dunno if it's that deep. It's just borax, sprinkle some on and see what happens.
