Had a week where nothing would forge right, figured out it was my anvil

I'm a newer smith, maybe two years in. Last month I had this stretch of four days where my steel kept acting weird, kinking on me, not holding heat the way I expected. I was blaming my hammer technique or the stock I bought. Finally on day five I noticed a hairline crack running across the face of my anvil near the hardy hole. Must have been developing for a while. I borrowed a buddy's anvil for a weekend and suddenly everything worked. Has anyone else dealt with an anvil failure that snuck up on them?

Your anvil lasted longer than my last relationship, at least.

You ever notice how the thing you trust the most is usually the last place you look for problems? That's wild how a crack grew over days without you seeing it. @simonp47 brought up a good point too, things can last longer than you think only to fail at the worst time. It's like that with my truck sometimes, runs fine then one day the alternator dies and I'm stuck wondering why it's been acting up. The lesson here is probably to check your gear more often, even the stuff that's supposed to be rock solid.
