Went to a friend's house and now I get the appeal of The Office

I spent years avoiding The Office. Everyone kept telling me to watch it and I just figured it was another overhyped comedy that wouldn't hold up. Last weekend I was at my buddy Dave's place in Portland and he had it playing in the background while we hung out. I caught like 10 minutes of the episode where Michael starts a fire in the office and I couldn't stop laughing. The way Jim looks at the camera got me every time. So I started it from episode 1 this week and I'm already on season 3. I think I was just in a bad mood before or something because this show is actually hilarious. Has anyone else here avoided a show for years and then finally gave it a shot?

Season 2 episode 1 is where it really clicked for me. I think the fire episode is funny but the way Michael tries to micromanage everyone after Dwight's "terrorist" training thing is what hooked me. Did you start at the first season or did you skip ahead? I know some people say season 1 is rough but I think it sets up the characters pretty well.

Man, the fire episode is where I got hooked too (that cold open is legendary) but season 2 episode 1 really sealed the deal for me as well. I started from the very first episode and honestly, season 1 is a little rough around the edges but it's totally worth it for the foundation it lays. Without seeing Michael's early awkwardness, the way he tries to run the office after the fire alarm thing wouldn't hit as hard, you know? That whole stretch of episodes from season 2 through season 3 is just pure gold, I rewatch them all the time.

Season 2 is fine but the fire episode is what hooked me, and honestly @daniel593 I don't think it's that deep. The show is just a comedy, not some character study you need to dissect. I started from season 1 and it's all entertaining enough without overthinking it.
