My coworker swore subtitles ruined shows, but now I watch everything with them on
So I had this debate with my night shift partner Jess last week. She said reading subtitles means you miss half the acting and atmosphere, and she refuses to use them for anything. I argued back that I catch way more detail with them, especially on shows like Dark or Peaky Blinders where the accents are thick or the plot moves fast. We went back and forth for like 20 minutes in the break room, and now I'm wondering if I'm the weird one here. Does using subtitles actually take away from the experience, or do they help you follow better? What side do you guys land on for binge shows?

nah people act like subtitles are some huge deal when its really not that deep. i put em on for everything and i still catch the acting fine. maybe your coworker just needs to chill and watch her shows without making it a whole thing.

catching the acting fine" is generous for me, honestly. I put subtitles on because half the time I'm too busy looking at my phone during the slow parts and need to know who just died. Last week I missed a whole plot twist because I was scrolling for two seconds, and the subtitles saved me from having to rewind. So yeah, I'm team subtitles forever.

Agree with everything you said, @riley_west. People act like subtitles are some kind of dealbreaker but honestly they just make everything clearer. I got into them for the same reason you mentioned - shows with heavy accents or fast dialogue were losing me every few minutes. Now I can't watch anything without them, even regular English stuff. I think it makes you a more focused viewer, not less. What show finally converted you to team subtitles?
