Just realized character-driven dramas bore me more than slow plot ones

I was at a watch party for a new HBO show 2 months ago, everyone was raving about the deep character arcs. But I spent most of the time checking my phone. Then I put on a simple action series from 2017 with a basic plot and minimal character work, and I was hooked for 6 hours straight. Am I the only one who prefers straight forward storytelling over 10 episodes of emotional backstory?

Man I totally get that. I had a friend who fell asleep during a whole movie night because the film was all about a guy dealing with his childhood trauma through long silent walks. But then I put on that military raid movie "13 Hours" from 2016 with basically no character work at all and he sat up and watched the whole thing without blinking. Sometimes you just want people shooting at each other instead of sitting around having feelings for two hours.

Long silent walks" lmao that killed me because I used to be one of those people who thought slow artsy films were the only "real" cinema. But honestly after a long day of work I just want to watch something that grabs me by the collar and doesn't let go. You're right, sometimes you just need that pure adrenaline hit without all the brooding.
