Hot take: watching Severance with subtitles on is way better than without

My roommate insisted I was ruining the show by having subtitles on. I gave it a shot without them for two episodes and kept missing key background details in the office scenes. Finally turned them back on and caught a bunch of whispers and computer screen text I totally skipped over. Has anyone else found subtitles change how you see a show's hidden stuff?

Oh but the whisper in the break room actually has subtitles that say something different than what you hear, that's the real trick.

caught a bunch of whispers and computer screen text" - yeah that's exactly what happened to me lol. I used to be one of those people who thought subtitles were distracting, especially for shows like this where the visuals are so important. But then I missed a whole whisper conversation in the break room and had to rewind three times before I gave up and turned them on. Now I catch all those little things on the computer monitors and the weird background sounds they make, plus you don't miss the dialogue when someone mumbles or talks over a loud noise. It's not ruining the show at all, it's actually making sure you don't miss stuff the creators put in there on purpose.

it's actually making sure you don't miss stuff the creators put in there on purpose" this is exactly it. I had the same problem with the whispers and the computer screens too. The show is so dense with little details in the background that subtitles help you notice them instead of missing them. People act like subtitles take away from the visuals but really they just add to the experience. Once you get used to them it's hard to go back.
