Binging with subtitles for 5 years fixed my audio complaints

I used to watch everything with the volume cranked and still missed half the dialogue. Action scenes blasted my ears out, then whispers came in at a mumble. About 5 years ago I turned on subtitles for a foreign show and never turned them off. Now I watch every show that way, even ones in English. The mix on a lot of streaming shows is just bad, actors mumble or talk over music. Subtitles let me keep the volume at a sane level and I actually catch the jokes and plot clues. Anyone else stuck on subtitles permanently, or do you think it ruins the acting?

Ha, I remember reading about how sound mixers mix for theaters with huge speaker setups, so everything gets flattened out on normal TV speakers. That explains a lot of why streaming shows sound so muddy. I went down the same path a couple years ago and now I can't go back, subtitles on for everything. It honestly makes me notice how much good acting is in the face and eyes, not just the voice, so I feel like I get more out of it, not less.
