Used to think disc brake bleed kits were a waste of money
I always just did the straw-and-bottle trick for years (messy but it worked). After 3 failed bleeds in a row on a friend's SRAM setup I finally bought a $35 bleed kit from Park Tool and holy cow it made the job 10 times cleaner and faster. Anyone else stubbornly do things the hard way before giving in?

You ever notice how we'll spend hours doing something the hard way just because we don't want to spend 30 bucks on the right tool? I did the same thing with a tire lever set last year. Kept using flathead screwdrivers and pinched three tubes before I finally bought the proper plastic ones. Now I swear by having the right tool for the job even if it stings a little at first.

Yeah @troyreed, but how many tubes did you wreck before you learned your lesson?

Started keeping a "stupid tax" jar after the fourth time I tried to fix a leaky faucet with tape and prayer instead of just buying a $12 gasket set. That pattern shows up everywhere, @parker_thomas - we all think we can outsmart basic problems with duct tape and stubbornness until the time we waste costs way more than the cheap fix would have. My neighbor spent three weekends trying to patch drywall with spackle that kept cracking before he broke down and bought a proper mud pan. The tube count was probably the cheapest lesson you got, honestly.
