Tried ultrasonic cleaning on my drivetrain and now I question every degreaser I used before
I spent 3 whole days scrubbing chains with citrus degreasers in my Austin garage, and one 15 minute run through a $180 ultrasonic tank at my buddy's shop got the cassette cleaner than any of those sprays ever did, so why do so many shops still swear by the old soak method?
The part about questioning every degreaser you used before really hits home. I did the same thing last winter, hours of brushing and spraying and still finding grit in the links, then a friend let me drop the whole chain in his ultrasonic and it came out looking new in one cycle. The shops stick with soaking because it is cheap and they can do a bunch of bikes at once, not because it works better. A tank costs money and takes space and you still have to pull everything apart first, so for them the juice is not worth the squeeze. But for my own bike I am never going back to the spray and scrub routine.
