The day I learned cable routing isn't just about looking clean
I've been building bikes for about 6 years now, mostly for my own shop and a few friends. Last week I was rebuilding a customer's touring bike and I routed the rear brake cable the way I always did, kind of looped around the bottom bracket. A guy who used to wrench for a pro team was hanging around and pointed out how my routing was creating friction at the seat tube binder. He showed me a different path that cut the bend radius in half. I tested the braking feel before and after and the difference was huge way more modulation and less effort at the lever. Made me wonder how many other little habits I've picked up that are actually working against me. Anyone else have a wrenching routine they realized was totally off after watching someone else?

Have you ever noticed how that same thing plays out everywhere once you start looking? Like I used to load my dishwasher certain way for years until my roommate showed me how to angle the plates so nothing traps water. Felt like a total idiot but also made me wonder what other little habits I just never questioned. Its funny how we settle into routines that sort of work and then one small tweak changes everything. Safe to say I'll be watching how other people tackle everyday stuff a lot closer now.

Yeah, flipping the silverware basket upside down changes everything too.
