Rear derailleur exploded on a group ride yesterday

I was climbing a steep hill around mile 35 of a 50 mile ride when my rear derailleur just snapped right off the hanger. The chain wrapped around the cassette and locked up the wheel instantly. I had to pull over on the side of the road and call my wife to come pick me up with the truck. Turns out the hanger was bent from a minor crash two weeks ago and I never checked it. Cost me $80 for a new derailleur and hanger plus a new chain. Has anyone else had a hanger bend slowly like that without noticing?

You say it bent from a "minor crash two weeks ago" and now you're surprised it failed? That's like taking a fender bender and acting shocked when the check engine light comes on later. A bent hanger is a bent hanger, period. Maybe next time check your bike for damage after any crash instead of waiting for the bill to hit your wallet.

So you say it bent from a 'minor crash two weeks ago' and I'm supposed to be surprised it snapped?" Nothing minor about a crash that makes your bike whistle down the road like a loose washing machine. I once crashed into a mailbox and thought I was fine, then my chain started doing interpretive dance three weeks later. Sometimes you convince yourself it's nothing until your bike decides to prove you wrong at the worst possible moment. But hey, at least you didn't have to explain to your wife why you're walking home in bib shorts covered in chain grease and defeat.
