He's been building wheels for 20 years and swears by feel, says a 5Nm click just teaches you to stop paying attention. I still torque every stem bolt to spec, but last week I did three by hand and they all held fine on a 30 mile test ride. Anyone here actually had a bar slip from hand tightening, or is this whole thing just us covering our backs?
Reminds me of a guy at my old shop who rebuilt car engines for 30 years and refused to use a torque wrench on head bolts. Said his wrist was calibrated. He was right about 9 times out of 10, and that 10th time cost him a blown gasket and a weekend he didn't get back. Point is, feel works until the day your hands are tired or the threads are greasy and you're off by 2Nm without knowing it. Bar slipping is rare, sure, but it only has to happen once at speed for the math to stop mattering.
