Guy at the co-op swore white lithium grease was fine for hubs
Back in March I took my old touring bike into the community shop to repack the front hub. One of the regulars there, older fella, told me white lithium grease would work just fine and save me a trip to the store. I figured he'd been doing this for 30 years, so what did I know. Three months later I pulled the hub apart and the grease had separated into this watery mess with chunks. Bearings were starting to pit. Cost me a new set of bearings and a race, about $60 total. He's still at the shop every Saturday, but I bring my own Phil Wood now and don't ask for opinions. Anyone else had a supposedly 'expert' recommendation come back to bite them down the road?
