Bottom bracket started making noise on a 30 mile ride last week
I was out on a Saturday group ride about 15 miles from home when I heard this creaking sound coming from the cranks. Thought it was just my pedals at first so I ignored it. By mile 20 it was getting loud enough that the guy next to me asked if my bike was okay. I made it home but the sound was constant by the end. Pulled the cranks off when I got back and found the bottom bracket bearings felt gritty when I spun them. Turns out water had gotten past the seal on a ride two weeks ago in the rain and slowly ruined the grease. I swapped in a new Shimano BB-RS500 and greased everything up good. Has anyone else had luck with adding extra grease to press-fit bottom brackets before installation?

I mean, I get why people do the extra grease thing on press-fit bottom brackets, but honestly I think it's kind of overblown. Idk, maybe it's just me but I've installed a bunch of press-fit BBs over the years and I've never had one creak or fail because I didn't add extra grease. The stock stuff from Shimano or whatever brand you're using is usually fine if you just clean the shell properly first. I've seen more problems from people going overboard with grease and then their BB just spins too freely or shifts around in the frame. If water got in on yours, I'd look more at the seal condition and check if your frame's bearing seat is perfectly round instead, cause that's usually the real culprit in my experience.
