A customer's old Shimano freehub body cracked clean through at the splines
It happened yesterday on a 90s mountain bike they brought in for a tune-up. The freehub was original, and the splines just gave out when I was checking the cassette for wear. I had to replace the whole freehub body with a new one, which took a bit of hunting to find the right model. Has anyone else seen this kind of failure on older Shimano parts?

Man, I always figured those old Shimano freehubs were bulletproof. Seeing one split right at the splines makes me second guess that. It must have been hanging on by a thread for years before it finally let go. Finding a direct replacement for a part that old is its own special kind of headache.

Tell me about it. I had an old Deore hub do the exact same thing on a beater bike last fall. The splines just sheared off clean, sounded like a bag of nails for about a week before it locked up. Spent forever digging through eBay listings trying to match the spline count.

Nah, I gotta disagree a bit, @tyler_wilson. Those old Deores were tough for sure but they had a known weak spot at the inner race where the pawls sit. Ive seen a few let go after years of dry riding in mud and grit. The splines shearing is actually pretty rare, usually its the whole freehub body that cracks first. Your eBay hunt sounds like a nightmare though, Ive been there with a Trek hub from 2001.
