Rant: Almost told my neighbor her dog barking was my alarm clock
My neighbor's dog started yapping at 6am every day for 2 weeks straight. I was outside grabbing my mail when she came out and asked if the noise bothered me. I bit my tongue so hard and just said 'it's fine' but I wanted to say 'your dog woke me up before my actual alarm did.' Later that day I bought a white noise machine for $30 and it helped a ton. Has anyone else had to deal with a neighbor who just doesn't notice their own noise?

Bet the neighbor didn't even think twice about it, right? Why do people assume that just because they're used to their own noise, nobody else notices it? I swear some folks live in a bubble where their own stuff doesn't apply to other people. It's like they'd rather pretend the problem doesn't exist instead of just being a decent human and apologizing. Honestly, good on you for grabbing the white noise machine instead of blowing up, but that's still ridiculous you had to pay money for her lack of awareness.

Had a buddy who complained about his neighbor's leaf blower every Saturday morning for a month. Finally he went over to ask about it and the guy just shrugged and said he didn't even own a leaf blower, turns out it was coming from three houses down. Now I just assume I'm wrong about where noise is coming from until I've double checked.

...and honestly that's kind of the perfect way to look at it. I've got a house backed up to a busy street and I swear half the time I'm convinced someone's mowing my lawn at 7am only to realize it's the landscaping crew for the apartment complex a block away. Sound travels weird, especially in summer when everything's open. Your buddy's story makes me wonder how many neighbor feuds start over a noise that isn't even coming from the right house. I guess the lesson is just check before you get too worked up, because yeah, your mileage may vary on who's actually making the racket.
